GAA Player Injury Benefit Fund
What is the GAA Player Injury Fund?:
The GAA Injury Benefit Fund provides cover to GAA registered members playing Hurling, Gaelic Football, Handball and Rounders' for financial benefits should they sustain an accidental bodily injury during an official match or a sanctioned challenge match or an official supervised training session. This means that if a player incurs medical expenses as a result of his GAA injury, the fund will financially support him if he has no other covers or to cover shortfalls on private covers that the player may have. The fund should not be relied upon to pay for all medical fees. Cover is subject to the terms of the Fund.
Is it insurance?
No, it is not insurance. There is no insurer involved in the operating of the Fund and it is not regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland. All monies within the fund come from the GAA through annual registration fees, gate receipts and Central Council contributions. In effect, it is a benefit fund, funded by members for the members. It is still governed by a set of rules, terms and conditions where exclusions and limitations apply. The fund is there to help alleviate the financial burden of medical costs on players resulting from their GAA injury should this happen.
GAA Injury Benefit Fund remains a self-funded GAA Fund that is in place to support and assist injured GAA players that have no other means of cover for their medical costs incurred or if there are shortfalls or excesses payable on their private health insurance policies.
The Injury Fund does not seek to fully compensate but to supplement other covers such as Private Health Insurance, National Health Insurance, Personal Accident Cover, Employment benefit covers, Income Payment protection covers etc.
For example, if you have private health insurance with the VHI, Irish Life, Laya or other provider, you must use this pathway first and put in a claim with your insurer before making a claim on the injury fund for any shortfall. The injury fund is there to supplement unrecoverable costs that cannot be recovered elsewhere.
There is no legal obligation on the GAA to provide an Injury Fund. Risk is an inherent factor in sport, as in life. When members voluntarily take part in Club activities, they accept the risks that such participation may bring.
Player Injury Fund Changes
From 1st June 2025 there has been Important changes to GAA Injury Benefit Fund
From 1st June 2025 any injuries have to be registered and managed by the player themselves (or parent/guardian of juvenile players) via their Foireann account. It is no longer done by the Club. Just like before, claims must still be submitted within 60 days of the injury date, or they won't be considered.
For all injuries occurring on or after 1st June 2025, Allianz is now the official claims administrator.
• Every player needs to be a fully paid-up registered member of Thomastown GAA Club to avail of the G.A.A. Injury Scheme - "GAA Injury Benefit Fund”.
• GAA Membership Year runs from January 1st – December 31st annually and it is a requirement that all members are registered to be considered for coverage by GAA Injury Benefit Fund
• Membership MUST be paid 3 days before participation in any Training, Official Fixtures or Challenge Matches.
If a Player gets injured at a Match or Training or Challenge Game
• The player needs to inform the team management during or after the match/training session that they got injured.
• Team managers of adult players should report the injury to the Club Secretary (Secretary.thomastown.kilkenny@gaa.ie) as soon as possible after the training session or match. Team managers of juvenile players should report the injury to the Secretary of Bord na nOg (Secretarybng.thomastown.kilkenny@gaa.ie) as soon as possible after the training session or match.
If a Player gets injured at a match or challenge game
•
team managers need to ensure that the referee is informed of the injury after the match and that the referee is advised to note this in his report. This is important as a Referee Report can be a necessary document for claims. How to Make a Claim
If you get injured, the player (or the parent of juvenile players) needs to log the injury on their Foireann profile www.foireann.ie within 60 days of the injury date. 60 days is a strict deadline and failing to do so within this timeframe will result in non-eligibility for a claim. Once registered, there is time to submit the necessary paperwork afterwards if financial reimbursement is sought from the injury fund.
To make a claim for any medical expenses against the fund, the player (or parent of an U18 player) will need to create an Injury Notification using an option on his Foireann Account. This involves registering some details about the injury.
Once the injury is notified on Foireann, the club will need to validate it. Once validated by the club, the claim will go to Allianz (the GAA claim handlers) for processing and the player \ parent \ guardian will receive notification of this. Allianz will then contact the player \ parent \ guardian via email regarding the documents required to resolve the claim. It is the responsibility of the injured player (or parent of juvenile) to notify and manage their claim accordingly via Foireann.
It is recommended logging every injury on Foireann, even if you don't think you'll need to make a claim immediately. This ensures you're covered if the injury turns out to be more serious later on.
On Foireann
• Navigate to "Profile" menu item
• Select "Player Actions" tab
• Enter the injury details under "Create Injury Notification."
• Complete the FORM and submit
• You will receive an email notification once claim is approved

Claims reported more than 60 days after the injury date will NOT be covered.
